Super: Kicks Ass
Remember Kick-Ass? I watched it a month or so ago on my laptop with a friend (who possibly bootlegged it?) and fell in love. The mixture of style, humor, and violence was perfectly balanced for its intended demographic—nerds. And I’m not afraid to call myself a nerd, I take pride in it. As should you! We’re all nerds, as Zachary Levi so eloquently put it during his appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon November 18th.
However, I feel like my nerdism was somehow misguided after watching this clip from the new movie Super (set to be released April 1, 2011). The plot goes along a similar path as Kick-Ass: a regular guy decides it’s high time the world needs a real superhero, said guy becomes a real, albiet naive and inexperienced, superhero, and said guy-but-is-now-a-superhero gets himself tangled in all sorts of danger, drama, and comedic relief. The makings of any great comic book-esque movie, as demonstrated by Kick-Ass. Yet, I feel like Super is going to take this simple formula and kick it in the radioactive gonads.
Now, tell me that wasn’t awesome.
From what I gather from that 2-minute clip, this movie will surpass Kick-Ass in nearly every way (if only because it stars Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page, two of my favorite actors). I can’t wait for it to come out in theaters! Hopefully I won’t show up to the box office and find out it was all an elaborate April Fools’ joke…
Also, Super seems to be maintaining the amateurish-and-sewed-haphazardly look of Kick-Ass’s superhero costume!
